Monte Sant'Angelo: Monte Sant'Angelo is a town of 13,491 inhabitants in the province of Foggia. It is part of the Gargano National Park and the Mountain Community of the Gargano.
Born around 1000, between 1086 and 1105 was the capital of a vast estate Norman, stands on a spur of the Gargano between woods and clear blue sea, lying on a rock of limestone full of caves and caverns, including the famous cave of the Archangel. According to the hagiographic tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared to the holy bishop of Siponto Lorenzo Majorano May 8, 490; in this appearance (called del Toro) Archangel ordered the bishop to dedicate the cave to the Christian religion in his name. Then again appeared to the bishop in 492 and 493 Majorano. Finally in 1656 appeared to the bishop of Manfredonia John Puccinelli Alfonso while raging fever, dispensing grace and healing.
Faithful and enthusiastic devotees of San Michele is to remember that the Lombards of southern Italy in the seventh century elevated the National Shrine Grotto of them. The sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel, has for centuries been a place of pilgrimage which started from Mont Saint Michel and across Europe through the Via Sacra Langobardorum. Sacked by the Saracens in 871, the Sacred Cave, in the second half of the tenth century was mandatory destination of cruises to the Holy Land, and was developing around the country.
Of the urban core, are worthy of note: the fortifications of the Norman castle, extended by the Aragonese in 1494, with massive round towers (enlargement of the Swabian period) the walls and the fortress. In the seventeenth century came under the Kingdom of Naples in the eighteenth century and became part of the Kingdom of Italy. The walls of the thirteenth century, still visible in part, have been preserved in fairly good condition until the end of 1700 when the building expansion and the changing socio-economicche, led to the creation of neighborhoods that have changed the ' ancient fabric of the city.
